The JAS Hair Academy

We are delighted to announce the opening of our Training Academy in late 2011.

Introducing Training Academy Manager Karin Walsh.

I was introduced to Hairdressing when I did my Work Experience in a Salon that was part of a nationwide chain in my home town of Trowbridge in Wiltshire. That was when I fell in love with the profession and the opportunity to make people look and feel good about themselves, something that very few careers offer.
On leaving school I completed my NQV Level 2 at College and was offered the chance to work in a newly opened salon in the centre

of Trowbridge. Here I achieved my NVQ level 3 and Assessors qualification, finding a burning passion for training the graduates. After 9 and ½ years I decided that I loved helping the new generation of Hairdressers learn so much I joined a Work-based Learning Provider. I travelled anywhere from Chichester to High Wycombe and across to Bath, with a number of stops along the way. Supporting an average of 70 students with one on one tuition and teaching classes the Science of Hairdressing.
After 5 and ½ years I decided that I missed the practical side to Hairdressing and my dream job of combining the Practical and Science sides to Hairdressing was offered to me by Jayne and Neil, the owners of JAS Hair Group. Here I am looking forward to creating a learning environment in the JAS Academy, that will give everyone the confidence and ability to reach their full potential in this amazing career.
Understanding what looks good and what looks exceptional is the difference between you being an average hairdresser and the hairdresser that clients come running back to time after time. Work that is done daily on your clients can look good, but looking at what the top stylists are designing, how sharp the cuts are or the stunning finishes produced, the colour that perfectly enriches the cut – these are all the starting points of exceptional work.
Working as a mobile hairdresser or in smaller salons, you may never get the opportunity to work with a high fashion stylist. You then face a challenging problem – how do you get to know the tips and tricks, learn their approach and see how they work?
Reading the magazines and watching DVD’s can help to a certain extent, but this is about you developing to be the exceptional hairdresser and bring out the best in your hairdressing. Get selfish, book out time to inspire yourself with courses and shows, and advice from others. You’re not alone out there; Hairdressing has always been about a community of people working together to improve and hone their skills, there are people out there who are able to help you – the JAS Hair Academy being one of them.
Sometimes you just need to shake of all of the mundane routines and invest in yourself and your career to set your imagination alight. What are next season’s trends? What is the latest catwalk look? Go and explore your specialised industry, feel proud to be a hairdresser and, most of all, have fun!
